The Benefits of Giving Back

Updated: May 29, 2018

Whether it is a large financial contribution or just giving a few hours out of a day to volunteer, there is something that is indescribably rewarding about giving back. There is an endless array of reasons why people do it. They may have a personal connection to a cause. They may see a need within their community that they want to help with. They may just want to do something that will make a positive impact. No matter what the reason is to contribute your time, talent, or money to a charitable cause, there are also a variety of benefits to reap by doing so.

It puts things in perspective.

Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. It gets hard. Sometimes it seems like our struggles are overwhelming. Volunteering can show us a different way to view our own challenges. By helping and interacting with those who are experiencing worse challenges than you are, you can view your own struggles differently and better appreciate what you have.

You can make new connections.

If you are looking to make some new friends, having a shared interest in giving back to an organization is an easy way to find them. You can also make professional connections and do some business networking. You never know who you might meet on your charitable endeavors!

You can learn and try new things.

There are so many different things that nonprofit organizations need help with. Work in a office and want to do something outside? Do you spend most of your time doing technical things and want to try something more creative? Maybe you are a bit of an introvert and want to build up your people skills? Even if you are utilizing a skill you already have, you’ll be doing it in a new way in a different environment. The opportunities to learn and try new things are out there, and you can have the experience while doing something for the greater good.

It sets a good example.

Let’s face it. Bullying is an epidemic. It’s not what I would have considered bullying in my youth either; it is far worse now than it ever was. Kids who perform acts of kindness tend to be happier and feel more accepted, and when that happens, they are less likely to become bullies or lash out in other ways. Be a good example for the next generation.

It’s good for your health.

Giving back can reduce stress levels, lessen depression, lower blood pressure, and more. Being involved in your community actually can make you a happier person and allow you to live a longer life.

Personally, I love the sense of accomplishment in doing something that will leave a positive impact. I’ve contributed financially when I could over the years, but even when I can’t, giving back is something I have always found to be an important part of who I am. From running larger fundraising events to smaller volunteer projects, I have done a lot of different things. I’d like to think that my contributions will make our communities, and world, a better place. But sometimes the best reward is actually just a smile and the relief on someone’s face because they know someone cares.
